She was a 1967 graduate of South High School in Knoxville, Tennessee where she was a varsity cheerleader and member of the school choir. She was also a cheerleader for the semi-pro football team the Knoxville Bears in 1967. She was a security guard at the downtown Miller’s department store before acquiring her Associates Degree and eventually starting her own successful software support business. Over the years, she and her husband were active members of Woodlawn Christian Church, Seymour Heights Christian Church and 1st Baptist in Seymour, serving in the choir and as youth sponsors. She loved her family and was a devoted wife, mother, sister and grandmother.
She is preceded in death by her mother Eleanor Darden, her father Sam J. Darden Sr., her brothers Donald Darden and Sam Darden, and her sister-in-law Kathy Darden. Survivors include her husband of 55 years, James “Jimmy” Overton; daughter, Valerie McKinney and husband Mike; son, Brad Overton and wife Heather; brothers, Billy (Johanna), Johnny (Suzanne), and Barry; sisters-in-law Glenda Darden and Connie Overton; her grandson whom she loved and adored, Cole Overton; special friends, Ernie and Celia Tracy and William and Mary Ruth Kidd; plus many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Johnson University, 7900 Johnson Drive, Knoxville TN 37998. A memorial service will be held at Woodlawn Christian Church, 4339 Woodlawn Pike, Saturday, March 9th. The service will begin at 1:00 pm, with receiving of friends and family at a reception to follow at the church.
