GLASS, MARILYN E, born 23 April, 1944 in Jersey City, N.J, was called by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to her eternal rest on April 1, 2020. She passed peacefully after a long battle with heart failure at her home in North Knoxville surrounded by her family. Marilyn was an active member of Christus Victor Lutheran Church in Knoxville, where her late husband, Rev. Donald P. Glass, (d.2008), was pastor from 1979 to 2000. Marilyn and Pastor Glass met and married at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Westfield, N.J. where he performed his vicarage. During their life together, they served Our Lord at parishes in Brampton, ON; Helena, AR; Hopkinsville, KY; and in Knoxville, TN. Marilyn is preceded in death by her husband, Donald; her parents, Elizabeth and Edward Manthey; and her brother, Richard Manthey. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Yu Jin “Gina” Glass of Oakville, ON and Timothy and April Glass of Bowdoinham, ME; and son, Daniel, who lived and cared for her at home in Knoxville,TN until the end; five grandchildren, Christian, Elizabeth, Leah, Jamin, and Iaanna Glass; sister Phyllis Schelpf; and best friend, Martha Neskaug. Marilyn grew up in New Jersey and graduated from Westfield High School in 1962. After graduation she attended Katherine Gibbs School, graduating in 1963. After marrying the dashing young vicar, she supported his ministry faithfully while still working to help support her family. Before retiring, she was most recently the office manager of a Knoxville CPA firm for more than 20 years and spent her final years helping others with their taxes. Marilyn loved to travel and did so prolifically. She traveled all over the US and visited her family in the Northeast and overseas in South Korea and the UAE. She dearly loved her 3 boys and 5 beautiful grandchildren from the two loving daughters-in-law who keep them in line, and she traveled to see them every chance she got. She loved being in the sun; the beach, cruises, and anything near the water. She was very active in her church, participating in weekly bible study, Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, organizing rummage sales and was the Treasurer for many years. She loved to spend time and dine out with her chapter of the Red Hat Society.
She leaves us now on a journey to bask in the light of her Savior, spend time catching up with family and friends who have gone before, and awaiting with open arms those to come later.
It is with regret and sadness that plans for a memorial service will have to be postponed until a later date due to coronavirus restrictions on social gatherings. Those wishing to be informed when this is planned can leave a message at www.cvlcknox.org/contact-us or call Christus Victor Lutheran Church at (865) 687-6622. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the fund of choice in Marilyn’s name to the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (https://lwml.givingfuel.com/donate)
