Hazen “Mac” McCarrell, age 94, passed away on March 17, 2023 at Sacred Ground Hospice House. He was born on August 11, 1928 in Cincinnati, Ohio. After moving to Knoxville, he attended the University of Tennessee and was a member of the UT Marching Band playing the saxophone. He marched in the parade and attended Dwight D. Eisenhower’s inauguration.
As an ordained minister, Mac served as a pastor at Sam Houston Mission, Front Street Mission and Bishopville Baptist Church. In his later years, he taught Bible Study at Midway Halfway House and served as interim pastor at Gillespie Baptist Church and Broadway Baptist Church, where he was a member.
Mac is survived by his wife of 55 years, Berneze McCarrell; son, Alan McCarrell; daughters, Sandra Smith, Sharon Ritchie (David), Cecile Collins and Penny Rogers (Gary); four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held for Mac on Monday, March 20, 2023 from 4-6pm with a funeral service immediately following. A graveside service will be Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at 3pm at Berry Lynnhurst Funeral Home, 2300 Adair Drive.
