Gabriel Paul (Gabe) Benson, age 39, passed away in the late of hours of Wednesday, August 26, 2015, after a weeklong trauma resulting from a tragic accident. Gabe was born October 30, 1975, in Knoxville, attended Farragut Primary, Farragut Middle, and Farragut High School (Class of 1992), and graduated from Middle Tennessee State University. Gabe was a generous, endearing, kind hearted guy who genuinely cared not only about his family and his many, many friends, but about all of those whom he met along life’s way. It was that personality and that caring nature that made him an amazing husband, father, son, brother, and friend. His wife of ten years, Theresa, and his boys, Gabriel Jr. (4) and Carter (2) were the focal point of his life. Gabe and Theresa were truly a “match made in heaven” – they worshiped each other. For the past two years, he had given up the “9 to 5” routine so that he could be deeply involved in the early years of his children’s lives and it worked - his boys cherished every moment with him. Gabe’s spirit, loving nature, quick wit, and dedication to his family and friends will be deeply missed by all but we will find comfort in our memories of Gabe and in watching his children grow into young men with those same qualities. Gabe is survived by his wife of ten years, Theresa Johns Benson, his sons Gabriel Paul Benson, Jr. (4), and Carter Johns Benson (2); mother Laura Benson Van Gelder and her husband David; father Rick Benson and his wife Beeb; brother Jake Benson and his wife Jenniferand their children, Claire and Cameron; father-in-law and mother-in-law Frank and Eileen Johns, Jr. who loved Gabe like one of their own; sister-in-law Mary Margaret Chandler and her husband Justin, and their children Brooks, Hatcher and Boone; and brother-in-law Frank H. Johns, III. Gabe is also survived by a multitude of loving aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews all of whom loved him very, very much and will miss him greatly.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Park West Critical Care Unit who battled so valiantly and passionately for Gabe. These doctors and nurses are truly a gift from above.
