Ethel was born August 9, 1935 in Union County Tennessee to R.O. and Naomi Butcher Nicely, the sixth of their eight children. The family moved to Knoxville in the late 1940s and she graduated from Karns High School in 1953. She worked for more than 30 years as a secretary and medical transcriptionist for the University of Tennessee, Penn Clinic, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Concord Medical Center. Ethel had a passion for music and enjoyed working in her flower garden. She had the gift of hospitality. Ethel was a wonderful cook and loved to entertain her family and friends in her home in Farragut, Tennessee, but most of all, she loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her husband, Ross S. Jones and her first child, Stephen Lamar Jernigan.
Ethel is survived by her children, Linda Jernigan Floyd (Eddie), Greg Jernigan (Cheryl), Tom Jones (Brenda), Larry Jones, Chris Creswell (Bob), and Carol Jo Formosa (Charlie), grandchildren, Stephanie McCoy, Davy Floyd, Callie Catani, Sally Pegram, Tommy Jones, Allison Pickle, Wade Creswell, Lucy Johnson and 13 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held for Ethel on Friday, December 3, 2021 at 11am at Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery with a reception to follow at Berry Highland Memorial Funeral Home. Family and friends are welcome.
