Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by her mother, Rachel Smith Wyrick; brother, James Wyrick Jr., grandparents, Thelma Jane-Blanche (Cash) Smith and Rev. Erskin V. Smith, all of Knoxville, TN; aunt, Stella Scalf of St. Petersburg, FL and mother and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Winfred L. Thomas who "loved Debra like a daughter".
She is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Darrell L. Thomas; daughters, Wendi L. Thomas and Christy L. Thomas Michel; grandson, Cash Thomas Michel; her father, James Wyrick Sr., and her best friends for many years, Gloria Sikes and Glenda Brown of Macon, GA, and Laura Boring of Knoxville.
Debra attended Sterchi Elementary and Central High School in Knoxville and she also attended Macon Junior College and Mercer University in Macon, GA.
Debra and Darrell began their lives together in Knoxville on June 26, 1970, moving to Belleville, Illinois in 1970, where daughter, Wendi was born in 1971. In 1972 she and her family moved to Macon, Georgia where daughter Christy was born in 1977. She and her family lived in Macon for the next 20 years, where Debra always said, "these were some the happiest days of her life". While in Macon, Debra was active in recreation and served on the Board of Directors for Bloomfield Girls Softball. In 1992, the Thomas family returned to Knoxville, where Debra was employed by Knox County Schools for 20 years.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Amedyis Hospice Care.
A visitation will be held for Debra on Wednesday, May 18, 2022 from 5-7 with a 7pm funeral service. Debra will be entombed at Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery on Thursday, May 19, 2022 at 3pm.
In lieu of flowers please make a donation to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Debra's name.
