Barbara "Bobbye" Cates Hunter, age 96, of Knoxville, Tennessee went to be with the Lord with her family by her side on Sunday, April 2, 2023. She graduated from Central High School, Class of 1945, then attended Carson-Newman College and graduated from the University of TN, Knoxville in 1949 with a degree in Home Economics. Bobbye was a long time member of Central Baptist Church of Fountain City and a member of the Bethany Sunday School class. She taught 10th grade girls Sunday School, Youth Training Union and was a long time member of the WMU. Bobbye was also a charter member of the Green Thumb Garden Club. She was recognized for 20 years of service as a Reach to Recovery volunteer and visitor in the Knox County unit of the American Cancer Society. Bobbye was presented with the Terese Lasser Award by the TN Division of the American Cancer Society. She was a certified trainer and trained hundreds of volunteers across the state of TN. Bobbye was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary with the Gideons.
She loved mostly being with her family, traveling and camping, cooking, growing flowers, her Bible studies and especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Bobbye was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, William C. Hunter; parents, Chalmers and Nelle Cates; sister, Jean Cate. She is survived by children, Bill (Pam) Hunter, Pat (Bobby) Robbins, Julie Heath, Steve (Rhonda) Hunter, Mary Nelle (Bobby) Glenn; grandchildren, Jason (Carla) Kirkpatrick, Hope (Mark) Britt, Heather (Jesse) Thompson, Kinsey (Logan) Herring, Sidney (Nick) Stamps, Andrew (Emily) Hunter, Sarah (fiance, Spencer Dalton) Hunter; great grandchildren, Kylie, Lydia, Maggie and Phoenix Thompson, Jackson and Luke Kirkpatrick, Eli and Noah Britt; cousin, Suzie (Don) Durham; several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Courtyards Assisted Living who have loved and cared for Bobbye and were her extended family for the last three and a half years.
Family will receive friends Thursday, April 6th from 5-7pm at Berry Lynnhurst Funeral Home with a funeral service following at 7pm with Rev. Ron Mouser officiating. Family and friends will meet at Berry Lynnhurst Funeral Home at 12pm Friday, April 7th to go in procession to Greenwood Cemetery for the 1pm graveside service. Pallbearers are her grandsons: Andrew Hunter, Mark Britt, Jason Kirkpatrick, Logan Herring, Nick Stamps, Jesse Thompson and Spencer Dalton.
