Arthur Clay Bailey Jr.

Clay passed away on April 30, 2018. He was born in Moultrie, GA on April 25, 1937, where he also grew up. He was the son of Arthur Clay Bailey Sr. and Rena Goff Bailey. Clay was an avid student of science and math, and he enjoyed playing high school football and American Legion Baseball. Clay was a graduate of Norman College in 1957 (Associate of Arts degree), Mercer University in 1959 (Bachelor of Arts in physics), and the Univ. of Georgia in 1969 (Master of Science in geology). He played on the Mercer Univ. baseball team as a pitcher where he received a sports scholarship. He taught science and math at Norman Park High School, Valdosta State College, and the Univ. of Georgia. He taught geology at the Univ. of Tennessee (Knoxville). He also worked in the Energy Education Division of Oak Ridge Associated Universities for ten years. The primary focus of his career was science education and the management/development of science education programs. His service in education lasted 35 years. Clay was devoted to his wife Carol Bailey, a devoted father to his children Donna and David, and he was crazy about his grandchildren Bryce, Connor and Logan. Clay’s interests were science, philosophy, politics, gardening, rock collecting, sports, and spending time with family. Clay was an avid fan of the UT Lady Vols, UT Vols football, and Georgia Bulldogs football. He loved to help his grandchildren with their math and science studies and discuss the deep meaning of science with them. He also never missed their sporting or music events. Clay is survived by his son David Bailey, his daughter Donna Ewing, his grandsons Bryce Ewing, Connor Ewing, Logan Ewing, his daughter-in-law Nadine Valentino, plus nieces, nephews, and in-laws. The family will receive friends on Saturday June 2 from 2:00 to 4:00 in the chapel at Weaver Funeral Home, 5815 Western Ave, Knoxville, TN 37921. There will be a eulogy at 4:00.
