I hadn't been in Middle House Residence at U of T long when I was informed that Jim was " one of the really smart ones " in the house. His early morning trek down the 3rd floor hall to fill his coffee pot and his ready smile made for a great start to the day . My condolences to all the family on the loss of a very fine man .

I met Jim in 1961 at the U. of T.  We lived in the same residence house and were "brothers" as young men tend to be living under the same roof.  Every Friday night, he left for Western to visit Rebecca, and every Monday morning he was off to classes bright and bushy -tailed.  He was the most efficient manager of time that I ever knew, and did his 40 hours during the week with weekends free, yet stood at the top of his class every year.  I was facing a failure in calculus, and in one night he took me to his room and taught the year's course in a period of 6 hours or so.  I passed with a gentleman's "C", despite missing virtually all my classes.  He was a genius as a teacher, and among the finest of people that I have ever known.  I am so sorry that he is gone.

Jim has been an inspiration to his social friends, to his many devoted work associates and to the broader community.  His genial, unpretentious character nicely concealed how smart he was.  He was aggressively recruited to UW as a graduate student because of his exceptional intellect, but he gave the University so much more.  Jim was a very effective teacher and an able administrator as Chair of his Department, Dean of the Math Faculty, Vice-President and Provost, and Executive Retiree too  always working for the good of all.  His friendships extended to every Faculty, to the moral side of Laurel creek, to students, teachers, researchers  and he was very much loved by staff.  Jim showed two senses of humour operating at the same time.  One was low key and affable, while the second injected a pleasant jolt with a keen observation that was dry and wry.  He was fun to be with  and he made so many contributions, all delivered with amazing humility.  Most sincere condolences to Rebecca and to the whole Kalbfleisch family on the loss. So sorry to hear of Jim's passing.  I remember his Dad and  brother Jack from my days at Orangeville High.  Jim always had a smile on his face, and kind words to say.

Jim's hallmarks were integrity, kindness, reasonableness, and precision. I was proud to be his subordinate at the University of Waterloo, and I am so sorry to hear of his death.

Jim was one of my closer friends from our undergrad class at Toronto, '59 to '63. He even let me copy some class notes--I'd lost mine under a barstool!. Then we were UW faculty mates for about 99 years after I returned to Canada in '66. I have nothing but very positive memories of all this, and feel sad at his demise. My wife Frances also met him often in Waterloo over the years, for example at the symphony. 

We both wish to pass on our condolences to all his loved ones.

I was very sad to hear of Professor Kalbfleisch's passing. He was my first statistics professor back in 1970, teaching us Math 233 from those famous mimeographed course notes, and it was in part because of  his fine teaching that I eventually pursued a career in statistics. In later years I always enjoyed chatting with him at meetings of the Statistical Society of Canada. My deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
