Beloved husband of Susan (née Gerner) Moskal. Dear father of Stephanie Fysh (Stephen) and Daphne Moskal (Bill Tanzola). Loved grandfather of Micah, Esme, and Sebastian Fysh, and Nathan, Malcolm, and Elliott Bruce. Predeceased by his sister Genevieve and his parents Thomas Moskal and Caroline Zabarylo.
Ed was a good man—a dedicated teacher, a talented musician and music lover, a man of strong values, and above all a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
He grew up in Kitchener and Waterloo then left for the University of Toronto, the first in his family to attend postsecondary. He graduated from Victoria College (6T1) with a BSc in Math and Physics. After marrying Sue in New York, Ed completed his PhD in Mathematics at the University of Illinois−Urbana. He returned to the new University of Waterloo to join the Department of Mathematics (later the Pure Mathematics department of the Faculty of Mathematics), where he was a dynamic, memorable professor who cared deeply about teaching.
Ed also cared deeply about the social good and was active for decades in the New Democratic Party. Many a political leader was hosted in Ed and Sue’s dining room, and Ed’s backroom work helped make Ontario and Canada a better place.
Ed loved music. He played piano, clarinet, and saxophone, including in community bands and a precursor to the KW Symphony, and sang in a KCI vocal group. As a student at Vic, he wrote a musical (about the 1837 Rebellion) and was music director of the Bob Revue. Later, he spent many years on the KW Symphony Volunteer Committee executive and sponsored orchestra members. There was always music playing around Ed, right to the end.
Ed enjoyed crossword puzzles and sudokus, red wine, and good mysteries, too. And after retirement, he and Sue travelled the world, often bringing a grandchild along. It was a fitting way to spend the rest of their life together for a devoted couple who had met, by chance, on a bus crossing the U.S.
Cremation has taken place. Ed's family will receive relatives and friends at Westmount Memorial Celebration Centre, 1001 Ottawa St. S., Kitchener, (519-743-8900), on Monday, November 28, 2022, from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m., followed by a Celebration of his life at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations would be appreciated to the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, 36 King St. W., Kitchener, ON N2G 1A3.
