He was born in Valdosta because it was the closest hospital to his hometown of Madison, Florida, where he would spend his early years living and working on the family farm. In 1965, Donald graduated from Madison County High School and headed off to Natchitoches, Louisiana to study Building Construction at Northwestern State University. He graduated as a proud Demon in 1969, earning a Bachelor of Science degree. He soon began a successful career in commercial construction that spanned over 45 years, officially retiring in 2018.
His career saw him oversee and manage the construction of over 150 major building projects, from apartment buildings to hospitals, prisons and everything in between. One of his proudest accomplishments is restoring the historic Rice Hotel in downtown Houston.
How can we sum up a life like Donald’s in a limited space? He was more than a successful project manager and more than a member of Kiwanis and Lions Clubs. He was more than anything he would accomplish or add to a resume. And he was even more than a guy who drove some classic and amazing Corvettes. What was most important to Donald was the family he loved and the circle of friends that he cared deeply for. It was the group he met for breakfast and the people he traveled with that mattered to him. And it was the boys, Dennis and Bryan, and their families that were most important in his world. He loved being a dad and a Pop.
Donald was a person who never met a stranger, loved being with people, and could tell the worst dad jokes that you can imagine. But he is a man who will be missed by all who knew him. We find comfort in knowing that he is resting in the arms of his God.
Some will walk through the Pearly Gates, and Donald will be driving a Corvette through them.
Donald is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Dennis and Kristi McCullough; Bryan and Heather McCullough, and grandchildren, Fenley, Chesney, Cora and Colt and sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Allen Cherry and brother and sister-in-law Walter and Lisa McCullough, ex-wife Phyllis Blackford McCullough and many other family and friends. He will also be missed by his very special friend, Marcia Schultz Gassoway.
There will be a visitation on February 17th at 1:00 pm followed by a Celebration of Life at 1:30 pm at Kingwood Funeral Home, 22800 Hwy 59 N Kingwood, Texas.
