Russell Victor Griffin, age 87 of Johnson City, entered into eternal peace with his Heavenly Father during the morning hours of Monday, September 18, 2017. Russell was born on December 5, 1929 in Greenwich, OH to the late Claude Griffin and the late Mabel “Burkhart” Griffin. On August 11, 1956, Russell married his most cherished friend, Peggy Gay, and after 61 years of a beautiful life together and raising a family, she survives.
Russell was a man who loved his family and his country. With a heart of serving his country and his family, his work ethic was impeccable. Russell served in the U.S. Army for 21 years. He served three tours during the Korean War and then he was assigned to the White House during John F. Kennedy’s administration. Russell had the great honor of serving on the color guard during the funeral procession for President John F. Kennedy; as he had the duty of carrying the U.S. Army flag during funeral procession. Russell also enjoyed photography, raising peacocks and golden pheasants, and hunting. His kindness and love that he had for his family and friends will continue on throughout their lifetimes. Russel and his wife have been devout members of Boone Trail Baptist Church for over 15 years.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Donald, and Bob. He is survived by the love of his life, his loving wife Peggy; one son, David and wife Tonya; two daughters, Dawn Wilkerson and husband Michael, and Linda Robb and husband Wayne; two brothers, Earl and wife Pauline, and Lawrence; two sisters, Helen Griffin, and Phyllis Dewitt; five grandchildren, Erica, Samantha, James, Bryon, and Anthony; nine great grandchildren, Seth, Taylor, Kendra, Kourtney, Alissa, Emmalee, Jordan, Rylee, and Alex; and two great-great granddaughters; and two sisters-in-law, Ruth, and Mary.
There will be a private memorial service held at a later date.
