Karen Culbertson Mulkey, age 61, went home to be with her Lord and her husband of 31 years, Jay Mulkey on July 20, 2012. Karen was a 1968 graduate of Gate City High School. She served on the reunion board with dear friends, and loved renewing old friendships. Karen was a lifetime member of the Apostolic Lighthouse Church of Kingsport. She loved serving God and her church family. Karen enjoyed singing in the choir and working in the Puppet Ministry. She loved children and had worked in child care for over 25 years for Lighthouse and Kinder Care. Her special ministry was story telling. Later in life Karen held the position of receptionist at Kingsport Times News. She enjoyed greeting the public and developing new friendships with co-workers.Karen was preceded in death by her husband, James “Jay” H. Mulkey, parents, Charles E. and Bertha M. Culbertson and sister, Darlene Culbertson. Survivors include two sons, Bryan Mulkey and wife Pam of Church Hill, Chris Mulkey and wife Renae of Kingsport; two daughters, Jannae Bright and husband Jonathan of Kingsport, Tricia Mulkey Frazier of Church Hill; seven grandchildren, Justin Mulkey, Tyler Mulkey, Caitlyn Frazier, Myriah Bright, Karissa Mulkey, Jasmine Mulkey, Gabriella Mulkey; one great-grandson, Isaiah Mulkey; two brothers, Tim Culbertson and wife Cynthia of FL, Dwight Culbertson and wife Trish of Terry, MS; three sisters, Arneeda Quiboloy and husband Joseph of Manila, Philippines, Charlene Isenberg and husband Bud of Kingsport, Jewel Tharp and husband Phil of Knoxville; several nieces and nephews, BFF and co-worker, Sheryl Edwards. The family will receive friends Monday, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Apostolic Lighthouse Church of Kingsport, 145 Shipp Springs Road with funeral services to follow at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor David M. Peters officiating. Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at East Lawn Memorial Park. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. The family would like to give a special thank you to her church family, friends, and relatives who gave special care and support during her illness.
