George Washington Chapman, age 84 of Kingsport, was taken up into the glory of Heaven to live eternally with his Heavenly Father Jesus Christ on Sunday, June 5, 2016. George was born to the late Joseph Edgar Chapman and the late Mary Ollie Cowden Chapman on June 29, 1931 in Scott County, VA. On June 19, 1956 George married his most treasured friend, and love of his life, Ms. Bernice Bishop. After making and sharing a lifetime of memories together, and raising their family, she survives.
George was a devout Christian and he was a servant of God. He was a hard worker and he worked as an electrician for Holliston Mills for 31 years. He enjoyed laughing and talking with his family and friends. He was a loving man who has left a wonderful legacy for his family to follow and he was a great inspiration to his grandchildren.
George was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Bennett Avery, one grandson, Aaron Travis Starnes; two brothers, James Chapman, and Ray Chapman; one sister, Bessie Brickey;. George is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Bernice Chapman; one son, Gregory Wayne Chapman; two daughters, Rita Karen Chapman Starnes Newell, and Trina Chapman Christian Rasnake; grandchildren, T. Landon Starnes, Dustin M. Starnes, Austin M. Chapman, David R. Chapman, Daniel B. Chapman, Alex D. Christian, Chelsea N. Newell, and Samantha L. Chapman; four great grandchildren, Sawyer Starnes, Emmitt Starnes, Declan Starnes, and Noah Chapman; one sister, Elizabeth Chapman Medlin and husband Ed; and one brother-in-law, Clifford Brickey.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm in the Chapel of East Lawn Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 7:00 pm in the Chapel of East Lawn Funeral Home with Brother Kenny Hammonds officiating.
There will be a Military Honor’s graveside service for George on Thursday, June 9, 2016 at 3:00 pm at East Lawn Memorial Park in the Garden of Apostles. Serving as pallbearers will be T. Landon Starnes, Dustin M. Starnes, Austin M. Chapman, David R. Chapman, Daniel B. Chapman, and Alex D. Christian. Pallbearer Memoriam will be Aaron Travis Starnes. Military honors will provided by American Legion Post 3/265.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Legion Post of Kingsport, TN, Temple Baptist Church of Kingsport, or the charity of your choice.
