Jerry was born in Midland, MI to Stacy and Erma Inman, growing up in Midland with his eight brothers and sisters. He earned his Bachelor and Masters of Arts at the University of Michigan. He graduated from Central Michigan with a graduate Specialist in Education degree. He worked as a history teacher in Beaverton, MI before moving on to HS Principal in Hale, MI eventually finding his groove as the Superintendent at Kingsley Schools where he served for 22 years.
Jerry met his wife, Carol, while a student in Ann Arbor. A social mixer and the gift of a lily led to 56 years of marriage. Jerry and Carol traveled extensively throughout their lives. In between work and countless
adventures, they raised three loving children. Later in life, Jerry found great pleasure in his four grandchildren. He was very proud of a plaque that declares “Only the Best Dads get promoted to Grampa.”
As an administrator at Kingsley, Jerry was a long time supporter of athletics, he was known as the Scorekeeper of the Stags. He was inducted into the BCAM Hall of Fame for scorekeeping in 2007. He was an avid skier and regularly chaperoned weekly ski trips the school sponsored at Crystal Mountain. Jerry played a large role in developing the Don Rhodes Athletic Field and was a member of the community group that planned and fundraised for the Kingsley Library.
In retirement he regularly worked at area school systems as an interim administrator. He was an avid cyclist doing many bike tours around the Midwest. He embraced his love of cross country skiing including
participating in the VASA for several years.
He was a long time volunteer at the Inland Seas Association eventually becoming a Lead Instructor. They presented him with the Jon Schulz Award for teaching excellence in 2002. He took great joy using hands-on approaches sharing his respect for the Great Lakes and their complex ecology.
Jerry was a great lover of nature and the outdoors. He enjoyed living in Northern Michigan and took great joy in the birds, deer and other wild life (including some grey house cats). He was the arborist for 60 acres of land and enjoyed thinning trees with a chainsaw. He recently donated 20 acres to support the Kingsley Civic Center.
He is survived by his loving wife Carol Inman, his son Andy Inman, daughter Emily Whitall, son in law Kevin Whitall, their two kids Kyle and Lauren Whitall along with his son Lucas Inman, daughter in law Whitney Inman and their two daughters Kinsey and Kennedy Inman.
A visitation will be held at the United Method Church of Kingsley on Friday December 27 from 5-8 pm. A celebration of life will be held at Kingsley High School on Saturday 28th starting at 1 pm.
