James retired as a Sergeant First Class after serving 22 years plus from the United States Army in Aviation, working on helicopters. He then worked 19 years for McQuire Transportation as a truck driver. James was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Davean Hannah Brooks and two brothers, Clarence (Red) Brooks and Dallas Brooks.
James leaves behind his wife, Gwendolyn Brooks, his daughter, Frances Brooks-Hampton (Lorenzo, Sr.); step daughter, Tasha Green (Jeremy, Sr.); two sons, Russell Smith and Raymond Brooks; two brothers, Douglas Brooks and Glen Brooks; two sisters, Jeanette Brooks and Robin Padilla (Miguel); 10 grandchildren; 1 great grandson; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
James was a great husband, father and friend, who will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
A viewing for James will be held Friday, August 27, 2021 from 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home, 1615 S Fort Hood St, Killeen, Texas 76542. A funeral service will occur Friday, August 27, 2021 at 12:30 PM, 1615 S Fort Hood St, Killeen, Texas 76542. A committal service with military honors will occur Friday, August 27, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, 11463 State Highway 195, Killeen, Texas 76542.
Pallbearers will be Russell Smith, Douglas Brooks, Orvin Lee, Raymond Brooks, Lorenzo Hampton and Kevin Lee. Honorary Pallbearers will be Raymond Gibson, Norman Myers, Raymond Hannah and Sam Coleman.
