Funeral Services for CSM (Ret) Homer Ralph Moss, 92, of Killeen, will be held 1:00 PM Friday, August 2, 2019, at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen. Private Entombment will follow at the IOOF Cemetery in Georgetown.
CSM Moss was born September 28, 1926 in Smithville, DeKalb County, Tennessee, to the late Homer and Wilson Hooper Moss, on a farm along the banks of the Caney Fork River. The schools he attended required that he walk 2-6 miles (one way) or by horseback. When the river was up, he had to swim across the river, with his horse, to get to school. After graduating from Smithville High School, at the age of 17, he went to work for Goodyear aircraft in Akron, Ohio.
January 12, 1945, Homer joined the US Army, at the age of 18 and took his Infantry Basic Training at Fort Walters, Texas. He served in the Pacific in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Some of the highlights in his military career included being selected to represent the US Army at the 3rd Anniversary of the NATO Conference at Constitution Hall in Washington, DC in April 1952. Also in attendance were President Harry S. Truman and Queen Juliana of the Netherlands. In 1961, he was honored to march in the Inaugural Parade for John F. Kennedy. He was also selected as a Distinguished Member of the 3D United States Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard). After serving 30 years, Homer retired from the US Army as Command Sergeant Major, 1st Cavalry Division, Ft. Hood, Texas, on January 31, 1975.
Among his many medals, awards and commendations he received from his career in the Army was the Combat Infantry Badge (Korea and Vietnam), Silver Star (Vietnam), Bronze Star for Valor (Korea and Vietnam), Legion of Merit (Vietnam), Army Commendation Medal and numerous medals for meritorious service.
After retirement from the Army, Homer worked for GMAC as a Field Representative for 22 years and then drove dealer trades for 12 years. He enjoyed water-skiing, traveling and spending time with family and friends.
CSM Moss was a Life Member of the 1st Cavalry Association and the Old Guard Association, American Legion, NRA, Citizens Committee for the right to keep and bear arms, Gun Owners of America and the Killeen Citizens Police Academy.
Homer is survived by his son, Howard R. Moss and his wife Christine of Georgetown, son, Greg E. Moss of Austin, and grandsons, Eric R. Moss and David W. Moss of Georgetown, and cousin, Janis Moorehead of Smithville, TN.
Visitation will be held prior to the service, 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM Friday at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen which is charge of his arrangements.
