He is also survived by his mother Ileen, his siblings, Sr. Rosalie Hughes SPC., Barb Hughes, Ray (Barb) Hughes, Joe Hughes (Amy Braun), Ileen (Greg) Meyers, Ron (Cory) Hughes, Connie (Allen “Zack”) Smith, Larry (Karen) Hughes and Mary Hughes. In addition, his in-laws, Richard (Val) Kantola, Kim (Bill) Dingwall, Jackie (Gary) McLenehan, Rod (Joan) Kantola as well as many special nieces, nephews and his special friends, the Spencer’s, the George’s and the Straight’s.
Pat was predeceased by his father, Henry in November, 2018 as well as his mother and father-in-law, Molly and Henry Kantola.
He was born at St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba, Michigan. He was the first of ten children and grew up in the small town of Gladstone, Michigan where he spent many hours helping on the family farm. Pat met the love of his life, Donna in January of 1971. He graduated in May from Michigan State University with a degree in Agricultural Engineering and married in October of the same year. He worked for a dairy farm equipment company, Babson Brothers while they lived in Chicago where they had Brad and then moved to Kenora in 1974. That same fall, Pat began working for Kantola Motors as the service manager where he stayed until he retired in May of 2016.
During his life, he thoroughly enjoyed being on the lake, boating, fishing, swimming and spending time with his family. He loved watching his children and grandchildren participate in their activities, which included spending many hours in the hockey arena. Pat took immense pleasure in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He was looking forward to his first flight with his grandson Dylan who is pursuing his pilot’s license. Pat was also fortunate to have enjoyed many trips to Mexico and Hawaii with Donna, friends and family. In his retirement, he spent a lot of time walking and enjoying the outdoors.
Those who knew Pat appreciated his patience, kindness and gentle nature. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who spent time carefully teaching those around him, something that all of us will cherish. He never let his illness stop him from doing what he enjoyed or being with those he loved. Throughout this time, Pat persevered with the same dignity and poise that he always had.
The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to Dr. M. Workman and the staff at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital as well as Dr. S. Banerji’s office of CCMB for their care and compassion over the last two and a half years.
A Memorial Service will be held at Notre Dame du Portage Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2019 followed by a reception in the Parish Hall.
