Helen Mary Doran

With family by her side, Helen passed away Sunday, July 15, 2012 at Pinecrest Home for the Aged.

Helen was born January 25, 1924 to Mary and William Davis in Keewatin, Ontario.

She is survived by her children, Fran White (Ignace), Wilma (Richard) Miller and Gordon Doran (Kenora), nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Terence, son, Terry and grandson, Christopher White, as well as her sister, Ann (Cederwall), and brothers Bill and Gordon.

Upon graduating high school, Helen worked as a teacher in the hamlet of Ingolf of which she spoke fondly. She was especially valued as a secretary/bookkeeper for various law firms in Kenora. For many years she worked as a bookkeeper/accountant at the Kenora Court House.

Helen was a member of the Kenora Senior Ladies' Curling League, enjoyed daily walks and meeting friends at the A & W for a cup of coffee. Helen was a talented musician and for many years served as the pianist for the Rebekah Lodge. She also sang in the G-Clef Choir. Helen looked forward to her weekly card games with her Keewatin friends, watching the Toronto Blue Jays, and in winter months, every curling game televised.

Many happy hours were spent on the lake and she knew exactly where they were as long as she was facing the back of the boat – you could say she knew the lake “backwards”!

Helen travelled to many places in Canada and the United States as well as England, Scotland and Sweden.

A heartfelt thanks is extended to the wonderful staff at Pinecrest. Your loving care and gentle touch was much appreciated. Helen looked forward to her daily chats with all concerned.

A Celebration of Helen’s life will be held Saturday, July 21, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre with Pastor Cathy Giroux officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pinecrest Home for the Aged or the Alzheimer’s Society of Kenora/Rainy River District.
