Danna Lee Ferry

She was born in Winnipeg Manitoba, before moving to Montreal and then Toronto, where she met her husband, Hugh. While in Toronto, Danna trained as a registered nurse at Seneca College. Later, Danna returned to Winnipeg, raising two daughters with Hugh, and building an expansive career as a nurse, first in Winnipeg, and later in North Western Ontario.

Danna was a devoted wife, mother, and friend who leaves behind her beloved husband of 40 years, Hugh Ferry; daughters, Allison (Phil) and Caitlin (Brock); sister, Judith Lynn (Corey) Cole (nee. Shkwarek); nephew, Guy Shkwarek; sister in law, Pat Harrison (nee. Ferry); brothers in law, Roger (Joan), Keith (Pat), and Derek (Lauren); cousins Wayne (Amy) Seller, Lynn (Manfred) Kline (nee. Seller); and a great many more extended family members and friends with whom she spent so many of her childhood summers and many more special moments in the years after. Danna will be remembered for her unwavering love for her family. She was a committed lifelong learner who handed down her adventurousness and curiosity to her two daughters. She also embraced her Metis culture and gifted her daughters with a strong sense of their history and traditions.

She found her soulmate in Hugh, and their love only continued to strengthen and grow with time. Together, they renovated multiple houses, turning them into warm family homes, with Danna always promising that “this will be the last one…”

Once empty nesters, Danna and Hugh settled in Vermillion Bay and then Kenora, Ontario. Danna, although semi-retired, continued to participate in research projects, see patients in Vermillion Bay, and volunteer at Oak Table in Winnipeg.

It is both Danna’s fierce determination and gentle kindness that many of her colleagues and friends and clients will remember. As a registered nurse, she worked in hospital for 25 years, first at Toronto General Hospital and then at Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre. She later moved into clinical care, specialising in footcare, became a published research author, and working with/for numerous not-for-profit organizations. She shared her knowledge by becoming a Certified Diabetes Educator, creating footcare coursework from the ground up. She continued her work as a researcher and independent footcare nurse until her passing.

Cremation will take place; no service will be scheduled at this time. We are grateful for your understanding in our time of mourning.
