Sophie Marie (nee Thoma) Phillips, 90, formerly of Newport and Morristown, Tennessee and Noblesville, Indiana, answered God’s call and passed away peacefully in Kennesaw, Georgia, surrounded by her family on Saturday, June 15, 2024. She was born on May 15, 1934, to Ludwig and Anna (nee Loeschauer) Thoma in Augsburg, Germany.
Sophie graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1988 with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. She was employed as Office Manager by Nightingale Home Health Care of Indianapolis, Indiana. In her retirement, Sophie enjoyed gardening and home remodeling. Her idea of a great weekend was landscaping her yard, planting flowers and shrubs, and making improvements such as adding a sun deck and pergola to her Noblesville home.
In addition to her parents, Sophie was preceded in death by her husband, SFC Francis Phillips, U.S. Army (Ret), Cosby, Tennessee, and her sister Anneliese Thoma, Augsburg, Germany.
She is survived by her son Gary (Karla) Phillips, Kennesaw, Georgia, her daughters Karen Sigman, Carmel, Indiana, and Sabrina (Jeffery) Freeman, Lowell, Arkansas and her four grandchildren: Kate Phillips, Acworth, Georgia, Matthew Phillips, Dublin, Georgia, Phillip (Jamie) Freeman, Rapid City, South Dakota, and Jack Sigman, Denver, Colorado, and Tennessee brothers-in-law Joseph Cammisa, Newport, Dayton Phillips, Cosby and sisters-in-law, Reda (Phillips) O’Neil and Arletha (Phillips) (Grady) Sutton, and many nieces and nephews, all of Cosby, and her beloved dog Suzie.
A graveside memorial service for interment of ashes will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at 1:00 pm at Jefferson Memorial Gardens, in Jefferson City, Tennessee.
