Faynelle Cox passed away late in the evening of July 14, 2024, at the age of 92. Faynelle, “Fay” to her late husband, Hubert Cox, and her many friends, lived a long, productive and fulfilled life. She was a strong, kind, generous, driven and intelligent lady who shared those and many other gifts and talents with her family and friends.
Faynelle was born in Silver Creek, Floyd County, Georgia, on September 9, 1931, to Annie B. Proudfoot Jones and L.D. Jones. She was the third of what ended up being nine children. She grew up in Rome where at Rome High School she excelled at basketball and softball. She moved to Acworth and then Marietta after high school and worked for a time as an administrative assistant at what was then Lockheed Georgia. She had the good fortune of meeting Hubert at Lockheed, who she married on October 22, 1954.
Faynelle and Hubert had a wonderful life together that included owning and managing two businesses, the Kwik Shop convenience store on Main Street in Acworth and Kennesaw Tire Store on Main Street in Kennesaw. They were an excellent business pairing. Faynelle excelled at bookkeeping and operations – she had an incredible mind for numbers – while Hubert focused on customers and personnel.
Faynelle and Hubert’s passion, however, was golf. Faynelle deployed her natural athleticism and inner drive to win eight PLGA championships between 1965 and 1976. She and Hubert were members of Pinetree Country Club and later Cartersville Country Club, where they developed many deep, lifelong friendships. Their vacations centered on golf outings to various places in Florida, St. Simons Island, and short trips to Callaway Gardens. Faynelle had a huge heart for animals and her pets, and she loved seeing the birds and deer that would visit her yard.
Even with the time and effort devoted to golf and co-managing businesses, Faynelle’s primary focus was her family and friends. She was a devoted aunt to over 20 nephews and nieces, to whom she generously gifted her time, attention, advice and financial assistance. She was considered by her family as steadfast, dependable and wise.
Faynelle was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hubert; and siblings, Bobby Jones, Bettye Chaplin, Gilda Johnson, Jerry Jones and Cynthia “Chris” Evans. She is survived by siblings Joy Frewer, Gary “Corky” Jones and Eddie Jones as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Faynelle’s later years were enhanced by the faithful support of many caregivers, most notably Kathy Jones, Pauline Ashworth and Myung Lee. The love, care and devotion gifted by those beautiful ladies allowed Faynelle to remain in her home until her death.
Everyone who knew Faynelle, whether a family member, friend or acquaintance, has been enriched by her life. That beautiful legacy is her most important gift to the world.
