Dorothy Overton Schreiber was born on April 23, 1922, in a very small town known as New Hope, Alabama. Her father, Andy Waller Overton, was a farmer, and her mother, Florence, was a stay-at-home mom to three girls. They lived on a 40-acre subsistence farm with no running water or electricity. The main crop they grew was cotton, and none of the girls enjoyed picking it.
Dorothy, who was often known as Dot or Dottie, graduated high school in New Hope and also went on to graduate from the North Alabama College of Commerce where she mastered secretarial skills needed for her future job as a secretary in the office of the Army War Department in Huntsville, Alabama and other civil service locations. It was in Huntsville, Dot met her husband-to-be, Leonard Schreiber. As a Captain in the Army’s U.S. Army Dental Corps, he was commissioned to establish the Army’s first dental service at Redstone Arsenal near Huntsville. Leonard made a career in the Army as a dentist/oral surgeon and retired as a Colonel, and then taught at Clayton State College in Morrow, Georgia.
They were married in 1951 and enjoyed 40 years together. Dot stopped working when their son, Milton, was born but returned to work for a year while her husband served in Korea. They were also blessed with a daughter, Sharon. Over the years the family lived in various locations with the Army assignments lasting mostly two to three years each. They lived in New Jersey, Texas, Georgia, Puerto Rico, Panama, and North Carolina. Many summers they were visited by Leonard’s son and Dot’s stepson, Russell.
Dot thoroughly enjoyed her life as an officer’s wife and mother. She is especially proud of her children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments. Milt graduated from Georgia Tech in civil engineering. He and his wife, Sally, live in Kennesaw, GA and have a daughter, Kati in Atlanta, and son, Christian in London, England. Dot’s daughter, Sharon, graduated from the University of Georgia and lives in Woodstock with her husband Bob Anderson. They have four children, Rob, Charles, Liz, and Ellen, and two grandchildren, Robby and Catherine Shaw. Russell and Liz Schreiber live in Sebastopol, California, and have two children, Michael and Sequoia, and a grandchild, Leonardo. Overall, Dot has eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
For the past two years Dot had lived at Savannah Grand in Woodstock, Georgia. Over those two years she was well taken care of by her primary personal caregiver, Eartha Burton, and the staff of Savannah Grand. Her other recent personal caregivers included Aretha Alston, Julie Moore, and Shelley Parker.
