Bob is survived by his siblings Betty-Anne (Don) Cornock and Pat (Carol) Hayes. He is also survived by his nieces Jillian, Colleen, Shawna, Krystal, and Melissa; as well as nephews Dylan and Adam. Bob will also be missed by several great nieces and nephews.
Bob is predeceased by his parents Jim and Wilma Hayes, and his sister Gaye Rush.
Born and raised in Kelowna, Bob graduated from Dr. Knox Secondary before completing his teacher training at Notre Dame University in Nelson, BC. Bob later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from UBC and a Masters from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. Bob spent most of his teaching career at Westbank Elementary and George Pringle Elementary where he taught grades four through seven. During his tenure as a teacher, he fostered many deep ties to the school community, developing many friendships with staff and families. His dedication to the classroom did not end with his retirement in 2010 as he enjoyed volunteering.
As a lifelong Kelowna resident, Bob dedicated much of his time to learning and preserving the stories of our region’s past. For Bob understanding his community’s history was not just an interest, it was a passion and his life’s work. As a lifetime member of the Okanagan Historical Society (OHS), Bob worked tirelessly for the Kelowna branch and OHS executive council. His commitment to sharing the stories of those traditionally ignored in the historical record was evident in the countless articles he wrote for The Daily Courier and various OHS publications.
Another of Bob’s passions was genealogy and he relished the challenge of sifting through records for names and stories of his ancestors. He was an active member of the local genealogical society for many years. In recent years, he was also involved with the Lake Country Museum and enjoyed conducting guided tours of the early settler section of the Kelowna Cemetery.
When not engaged with Okanagan history, Bob enjoyed road trips throughout the Southern Interior and traveling abroad to the United States, Great Britain, Ireland, France, and the Netherlands.
We wish to offer a sincere thank you to Bob’s oncology team at the Cancer Clinic in Kelowna for its care and support during his cancer journey. Also, thank you to the staff at the Central Okanagan Hospice House for the kindness and support offered to both Bob and our family.
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, December 2, 2024 at 11am at the Cathedral Church of St. Michael and All Angels. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob Hayes’ memory to the Nature Conservancy of Canada, Critteraid Animal Sanctuary, or to BC Cancer would be appreciated.
