On October 23rd, 2021, at the young age of 88, Doug passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family after a hard-fought and courageous battle with cancer.
Doug was born and raised in Montreal. He joined the Canadian Army as a medic in 1951, at just 17 years old. Shortly after completing training, he was sent overseas to serve in the Korean War. Upon his return, he went on to serve a long and distinguished 37-year military career and was appointed to the rank of Member of the Order of Military Merit (MMM). Along the way, Doug met the love of his life, June, who he married in 1957. Together they raised two boys. Doug and June retired to Kelowna BC in 1988.
Doug was full of life and had a tremendous sense of humour. Most of all, he firmly believed in the importance of family and friends. Outside of family, Doug’s two great loves were golf and the Habs. In his final weeks he exceeded doctor’s expectations, refusing to give in to cancer until he saw the Habs get their first win of the regular season.
Doug is predeceased by his parents (Charles and Mary (nee Doyle)) and all his five siblings (Marion, George, Leo, Rita and Patricia). He often joked that they are all looking down at him and saying “What? We left him in charge??”
Sadly, in 1997 Doug was predeceased by his loving wife June. For the 24 years that followed, he has visited his “Junie-bug” on a nearly weekly basis to give her updates on various goings-on and to bring her (and the local wildlife) fresh flowers. Local musicians recounted Doug’s endless devotion to his late wife in song. Doug will be interred alongside her so that they will be together forever.
Doug is survived by his two sons, Patrick (Lorelie) and Robert (Sharon) as well as eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces.
In Doug’s own words, “It has been a wonderful life, full of rewards, sadness, blessings and the very best any old guy could hope for.” Doug will be deeply missed and ever so lovingly remembered. The family wishes to thank the nurses from Palliative Home Care West Kelowna for the wonderful support they provided.
