Derek was not one to lament the darkness when there were stars to be admired and he brought his own unique light into the world. He was a deeply caring, contemplative guy who always said we are here to learn.
He touched many lives in the Okanagan during his 30-year career with the Ministry of Children and Families. “A real gem”, in cowboy boots and a leather jacket. In retirement, Derek thoroughly enjoyed all his e-bike adventures to radio towers in the area, both solo and with many biking friends (including the “AH” bike gang) and pedaled over 13,000 km in 2 years. He had a connection to nature via photography and was always more interested in the journey than the destination. Derek had a gentle humor that created many memorable moments and connections between people.
Derek leaves behind his wife of 20 years Mary, his children, Lia (Guy), Stephanie (Shannon), Spencer, stepchildren Travis, Shawn and Michael, granddaughters Jolie and Celeste, sister Debi (Kim), nephews Kyle and Joel, and many, many others.
An open house to celebrate Derek’s life will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the Ramada Inn and Conference Centre, 2170 Harvey Avenue, Kelowna, on Thursday November 24th.
