Carol is survived by her four children, Vicki Steele (Ken), Terri Macdonald, Mark Macdonald, and Jodi Schafer (Konrad), her five grandchildren, Dayna Kung (Bruce), Darcie Anderson (Ryan), Devray Steele, Eric Chmilar, and Brianne Chmilar, and her five great-grandchildren, Chloe and Lily Kung, Jordynn and Brayden Anderson, and Jayce Chmilar. Brothers Lorne and Howard and Sister Evelyn predeceased Carol.
Carol was born on February 4, 1940, in Watrous, Saskatchewan to parents Edmond Leon and Grace Garrett. In 1941, the family moved to Lethbridge and in 1945, after her father and sister returned from serving in the RCAF, the family moved to Vancouver, where she eventually met Andrew Macdonald. Carol and Andy married on May 15, 1959 and had four children and 26 years together. They had a number of moves over those years, moving to Winnipeg, Guelph, and lastly, Kelowna.
In 1985, Carol reconnected with Keith Baker, an old friend from her bowling days. They were married on August 1, 1987 and had a wonderful marriage. They very much enjoyed dinner and dancing at the Elks Lodge on Friday or Saturday evenings. They had several trips to Hawaii, and enjoyed camping in their motorhome. The annual family Labour Day weekend at Palmer Lake was a favourite time for Carol with lot of music, laughter, games, campfires, and great togetherness.
Some of Carol’s favourite pastimes were reading, tending to her flower garden, and sitting in the sun. She attended Curves, and became Queen Mother of the Red Hat Dazzlers Chapter. Carol was also very fond of the Swarovski crystal collection that she and Keith had accumulated over their years together, and had a special affection for swan figurines.
Carol’s children would like to thank all of the staff at the Village at Mill Creek for caring for Mom over the past three years. Their kindness and compassion in Mom’s final days and hours is very much appreciated.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Carol’s memory may be made to the BC Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Alzheimer Society of BC.
A Celebration of Carol’s Life will be held from the Chapel of First Memorial Funeral Services, 1211 Sutherland Ave, Kelowna on Saturday, June 22, 2024 at 1:00 PM
