Marie E. Clay 94, a resident for the past two years at Keene Center Genesis, 677 Court Street, Keene, NH and formerly of Wilde Road, Spofford, NH, died Friday, July 19, 2013 at the Cheshire Medical Center / Dartmouth Hitchcock, Keene, following a period of failing health as well as from complication following surgery.
She was born at 84 Island Street in Keene, NH, March 17, 1919, the daughter of Lawrence J. and Marie E. (Lee) O’Brien. She grew up in Keene attending St. Joseph Regional School and Keene High School.
In 1936, she married Robert Clay and they celebrated 65 years of marriage before his passing in August of 2001.
She was a devoted wife and mother, and took great pride in her role as homemaker and raising her family. She especially enjoyed the many family gatherings. She had a special love for her cat, “Snowball”.
While residing at Genesis, she blossomed and became a very active participant in their daily events. She earned the name of “Giggles” by the staff members at Genesis as she was always upbeat and happy. She loved to play BINGO, trivia, horse races, and was also able to join other residents on scenic bus trips. She also enjoyed her weekly visits with her children, and visits from her grandchildren, especially being able to meet her newest three great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff at Genesis for making her past years happy ones. A special thank you goes out to Genesis staff, Maggie and Jimmy, whom she often mentioned. You held a special place in her heart.
She is survived by two sons, Robert E. Clay and his wife, Peg, of Spofford, Kevin L. Clay and his wife, Awilda, of Walpole; two daughters, Deborah J. Stone and her husband, Brian of Swanzey, NH, Barbara M. Topa of Westmoreland, NH; eleven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 2 step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Judith Wood; granddaughter, Sara Clay; and two brothers, John L. O’Brien and James L. O’Brien.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, July 25, 2013 at 10:00 AM in the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene, NH. Burial will follow in the Friedsam Cemetery, Route 63, Chesterfield, NH. Family and friends are invited to call on Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Foley Funeral Home.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Mrs. Clay’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 Eight Avenue, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10001, or to the American Kidney Fund, 11921 Rockville Pike, Suite 300, Rockville, MD 20852.
