Joan Evelyn Obuchowski, 83, of Troy passed away peacefully March 10, 2016 at the Genesis Nursing home in Keene. She spent five years at Genesis and was very well cared for by their loving staff. The staff always commented on Joan’s charming smile.
She was born April 5, 1932, daughter of Paul Daniels and Evelyn Conant Daniels Corbett. She was born in Randolph, VT and moved to Walpole, NH at a very young age. Joan went to school in Walpole for twelve years and made many lifelong friends. Her class had many reunions that Joan enjoyed attending. Joan played basketball for Walpole but her true love was cheerleading. She was captain of the cheerleading squad.
Joan attended the Walpole Congregational Church where she was an acolyte and sang in the choir. After graduation from Walpole HS she attended Northampton Commercial College in Northampton, MA. She graduated with an Executive Secretary degree. Joan went to work in Springfield, MA at the Mass Mutual. Joan became engaged to her future husband Frank and moved back to Walpole. She went to work at Gay Express Trucking Company in Bellows Falls, VT. On April 30, 1955 Joan married Frank Obuchowski at the Sacred Heart Church in Bellows Falls. They lived in Bellows Falls for about two years and had a baby boy Peter who only lived one day. A tragedy. In Bellows Falls Joan was in the large ball bowling league. Joan made many friends in Bellows Falls and was active socially. Some of her Bellows Falls friends came to their 55th wedding anniversary.
In 1957 Joan and Frank moved to Newport, NH where Frank was employed by the A&P Tea Company. In Newport, Joan went back to large ball bowling league. Joan was active in St. Patrick Church. While in Newport, Joan and Frank were blessed with three children David, Nancy and Mark. Three children, church, and bowling kept Joan busy. Many cookout and gatherings were held with friends and family at Lake Sunapee.
In 1965 the family moved to Troy, NH as Frank went into retail business with Joan’s brother Bob. Joan was a Teacher’s Aide at Troy Elementary for more than ten years. More than fifty students would visit “Mrs. O” for Halloween trick or treating. She was an active volunteer, she served as Supervisor of Voting Checklist, worked at Helping Hand, and she was the first female lector at the Immaculate Conception Church of Troy as well as Treasurer of the Ladies Alter Society.
Joan loved sports and attended many baseball, softball, basketball, field hockey and football games to watch her children. She enjoyed watching football and little league baseball on TV. Joan enjoyed guided bus tours having traveled on a 30-day cross country trip to California and back visiting 46 of the 48 States. She and Frank also visited Mexico and Eastern Canada including Nova Scotia, Cabot Trail, and Newfoundland and marveled at the ice bergs.
On summer vacations all the family would go to Minerva, NY in the Adirondacks. Joan loved her children and grandchildren. She often cared for her grandchildren for the weekend. She was very proud of her children and grandchildren and would let any and all listeners know about it. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and shopping. After Joan retired from Monadnock School District, she turned her attention to her mother whose health was failing. Much time was spent traveling to and from South Deerfield, MA. She stayed with her mother many nights and weekends. Joan was loved by her family and surely will be missed by family and people who knew her.
Survivors include her husband, Frank Obuchowski of Keene to whom she was married for 61 years, her children David, Nancy and Mark, their spouses and seven grandchildren. Joan had five brothers and is survived by her brother Randall.
