Caroline was born on March 7, 1921 in Barre, Vermont, the daughter of Arthur R. and Florence (Marden) Nichols.
Caroline moved to Goffstown, NH in 1936 at the age of 15 where she was a graduate of Goffstown High School. She then attended Keene Teachers College now Keene State College. She graduated in 1943 with a bachelors degree in elementary education.
Caroline’s first teaching assignment was at Shirley Hill, a one room schoolhouse in Goffstown. Here she taught grades 1-8. After several years of teaching at Shirley Hill Caroline also taught in Greenville for 2 years. Caroline then moved to Keene and enjoyed 36 years of teaching various grades with 26 of these years at Symonds School in Keene. After retirement Caroline attended many functions of the Cheshire County Retired Teachers Association and was a very active volunteer and member of the Keene State College Alumni Association. She was also a proud member of the Keene State College Golden Circle. Caroline was also a longtime member of the United Church of Christ in Keene
On September 23, 1944 Caroline married Clifford J Pregent when he was on a 10 day furlough from the army during WWII. They were married for 73 years and for 39 years raised their family on Winchester Ct in Keene. During their life together “Nickie and Cliff” enjoyed many years at their cottage and later retirement home at Sand Pond in Marlow, NH. Here they hosted many family and friends over the years. They were an active part of the Sand Pond community and helped to preserve the lake for future generations to enjoy. Caroline and Clifford were also longtime members of the Monadnock Squares. Caroline was also an avid Red Sox fan and attended many red sox games. She was also a fan of Drew Bledsoe and Payton Manning
Caroline is survived by her husband of 73 years Clifford J. Pregent of Keene; her daughters, Pat Pregent of Bellows Falls, VT and Nora McCasland of Keene; her beloved grandchildren; Cory Descoteau and his wife Mimi of Pittisburgh, PA; Timothy Descoteau and his partner Erin Myhaver of Keene; John Descoteau and his partner Gina Pearce of Keene; Joshua McCasland and his wife Ashley of Webb City, MO; Caroline Flynn and her husband Courtney of Fate TX; great-grandchildren Dylan, Jack, Lachlyn, Henry and Katey; a sister, Betty Hambleton, of Goffstown; brother-in-law Richard Pregent and his wife Janet of Keene and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Arthur R. Nichols, Jr and a sister, Emeline Bailey.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, November 20, 2017 at 11:00AM in the United Church of Christ, 23 Central Square, Keene. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Cemetery, Main Street, Keene. Family and friends are invited to call on Sunday evening from 5:00 to 7:00PM at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene.
