She lived in New Jersey until 1967. In New Jersey she was a leader in Girl Scouts, an officer in the PTA, a teacher in Sunday school and a full time housewife. Her first husband, Stanley U. Britten died in 1966.
She moved to Haverhill Four Corners, NH in 1967 and in 1968, she married the Reverent Harold K. Shelley, who was minister of the Keene Unitarian-Universalist Church in Keene.
While in Keene, she attended Keene State College, graduating in 1973 with a Bachelor Degree in Science and in 1983, a Master Degree in Education. She was the first in her family to graduate college.
Mrs. Shelley was a Special Education teacher for thirteen years in the Marlborough School, and then went on to be the Special Education Coordinator for the Monadnock Regional School District.
She was active in the Keene Unitarian-Universalist Church, the Keene Senior Center, Friends of the Thorne Art Gallery, American Association of University Women, Cheshire Retired Teachers Association, NH Retired Educators Association, and a member of NOW.
Following her husband’s retirement, they moved to Marlborough, NH where she added to her activities; a member of the Friends of the Frost Free Library, a coordinator of the Senior Citizen Meals, voter checklist supervisor and voter registrar.
Survivors include her daughter, Denise P. Hood and her husband, Steven; a son, John S. Shelley and his wife, Linda; a sister, Ellen Knatz; a stepson, Greg Shelley and his wife, Cathy; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
In following Mrs. Shelley’s wishes, there are no calling hours or services.
