He was born July 16, 1919 in Watson Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of Amilda (Seifert) and Ernest F. Schultz. At a young age, he tragically lost his mother to illness. In 1934, Olga Binder was warmly welcomed to the family as his step-mother. He grew up in Winnipeg where he attended area schools and worked for his father at Ernie’s Red Indian Service Station.
Following high school, in 1938, Albert ventured out into the world in search of work. He found himself in Milwaukee, WI working seasonal jobs. World War II had started to brew and war was becoming a reality. On April 30 1941 Albert received his draft letter and enlisted in the Navy. During his four years of service, he travelled up and down the East Coast and sailed to many ports from Texas to Aruba, Morocco, Algeria, Bermuda, and Newfoundland while on sea duty.
If it were not for his travels, he may have never met Marjorie Blake who was stationed at the Women’s Army Corps in Florida. She and Albert communicated through letters while Albert was at sea. Marjorie had been honorably discharged and returned to her home of Keene, NH. Albert was granted a 30-day leave and went to visit Marjorie. Little did he know, before his visit was over, he would become engaged and married within three short weeks. The two exchanged vows on March 25, 1944 and began a family. After the birth of the couple’s first daughter, Albert was discharged soon thereafter in September of 1945.
Albert attended Bliss Electrical School in Tacoma Park, MD where he completed his diploma in 1946. Graduating meant being able to return to his family who had stayed in Keene. He was employed by the New England Telephone Company for 42 years as the Central Office Technician. He had many responsibilities and projects including an assignment in Alaska setting up the Distant Early Warning line, a long-distance radio network from Alaska to Greenland to Scotland.
In the 1960’s, Albert organized a Boy Scout troop for the First Baptist Church where he was a member. He enjoyed planning outings and camping and being a dedicated leader for 14 years.
From 1962 to 1968 Albert returned to school at Keene State College. Although he had hoped to earn a Bachelor’s degree, he was proud of his enthusiastic thirst for knowledge.
Albert and Marjorie enjoyed retirement traveling the US and abroad. He was a member of the American Legion and a Mason for 50 years. Albert enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden and was always working on a project around his house. He enjoyed politics and read the newspaper daily to stay up to date on current events. Fondly referred to as “Poppy” by his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and their friends, Albert was involved with all of their lives. A kind and caring man, Albert will be remembered for his gentle and accommodating nature, always finding the positive in every situation.
Albert will be dearly missed by his two daughters: Susan Wyman and her husband Tom of Keene, NH, and Ann Tisdale and her husband Vernon of Fairhaven, MA; grandchildren: Sarah Robinson and her husband Cris of Statham, NH, Lindsay Forde and her husband Jarlath of Dover, MA, Tracy Orr and her husband Joshua of Cambridge, MA, Elizabeth Wyman of Lancaster, NH, and Nathan Tisdale of Fairhaven, MA; great-grandchildren: Allie, Noah, William, Marin, Caroline, Hugh, Amelia, and Katherine; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of 54 years: Marjorie Blake; and four siblings: Lucinda Plotka, Luella Findling, Edith Martin, and William Schultz.
A funeral service will be celebrated Monday, August 7, 2017 at 2:00 pm at the United Church of Christ, 23 Central Square in Keene, NH. Burial with Military Honors will follow at 4:30 pm that day at Centennial Cemetery, Centennial Hill Road in Gilsum, NH.
