Here is a message from a Chinese medicine doctor that treated Philip during his battle with cancer.

Philip 在我們的心中是位溫雅又有智慧的人，幾次同遊中深知他對生命的認真執著，又對任何有趣的事投以熱愛全力以赴。

Philip,你有位相愛相伴的好太太及孝順的兒女，孫子，孫女們，尤其在你治療過程中，親情相伴同喜同哀，雖然現在看似大家失去了你，但並沒有，你在我們思念這一塊佔了很重要的一席，而Judith 及兒孫們的愛更是你懷抱着溫情，投向美好的地方去的平安力量。

因為疫情不能親自追思，但思念永遠不受時間空間限制，因為你永遠還與我們同在。

When we think of Philip, these words came through our mind:

Family man, religious, loving, humble, modest, kind, smiles, friendly, honest, person of highest integrity, committed, confident, exceptional engineer (actually he was the best on everything he does), fun to be around, loves to share knowledge and mentor,  and loves good food.

I met Philip in 1984 when he joined FMC.  Even though we were in a different product group we became friends and formed our small Asian lunch group.  Of course, many non-Asian joined us for lunch, too.  We talked about everything at lunch……including engineering.  Philip is a big brother to me and all of us engineers.  

Philip loves his family, his wife Judith, son Eddie and daughter Christina.  He is so proud of them.  One instance that imprinted in my memory;  Philip told me that Eddie and his high school team won 1st Place in the Texaco Star Academic Challenge and it will be aired on that evening news.  We watched the replay and the question that gave Eddie and his team this decisive victory was “What is the smallest primate in the world?”  And, as soon as the question ended, Eddie without thinking twice, blurted out, “It’s a Pygmy Marmoset”.   How in the world someone will know this answer readily?  Later Philip told us that Eddie was accepted to Rice University and a year later Christina was also accepted to Rice University as well.  Hilary and I truly share their happiness. 

[From Facebook] You have my sincere condolences regarding the passing of Philip. I have known Philip for many years. I met him through work in 1992, and we worked together until the company was sold in 1996. We were separated but reunited in 1999 and worked together until 2006 when I left to work elsewhere, but he stayed until he retired.

Philip was a very great man. He was very nice and kind and was like a big brother/uncle to me. While working together, he would help me when I needed it. Even after retirement, we kept in touch. Occasionally we would meet up and have lunch together. We’ve had many, many fond memories over the years.
It deeply saddened me to hear of Philip’s passing and I will keep his family and loved ones in my thoughts and prayers.

I first met Philip when I first started my engineering career in 2005. He patiently spent countless hours teaching me how to run finite element analyses, among many other things. I appreciated his desire to share his expertise and train others. He was ALWAYS happy to do so. He was a coveted mentor and genuine friend to many. My sincerest condolences to you and your family!

I can honestly say when I had an engineering question he never hesitated to help and never made me feel like I was bothering him with a stupid question. A person that departs from this earth never truly leaves, for they are still alive in our hearts and minds. Through us, they live on.

When I received the news that Philip had passed away, I thought about the first time we met when he was about ten years old. It was the first time somebody called me older sister, “A Gi.” I was so moved and happy. He also inherited my godfather’s look, whenever I saw him I was reminded of my loving godparents. 
He was active and bright from a young age and always looked for adventures by disassembling and playing with various tools and instruments for fun. It was no surprise when he passed the tough entrance exam to get into the best university in Taiwan and majored in mechanical engineering. He then came to the United States to pursue his master’s degree in engineering. After graduating, he found a job in the oil industry, moved to Texas, and had a great professional career in the industry.
He was a man with integrity and a sense of humor. He was also very close to his family in Taiwan. After he was diagnosed, he made a few trips back to Taiwan to spend time with family there during his remission. He set an example for the family to always be kind, caring, put forth all effort when needed, and live every day to the fullest.

親愛的大舅：
        在父親節當天得知你離世的消息，十分震驚、錯愕，還有滿滿的不捨，去年底小舅的告別式竟然是我們最後碰面的機會，那時，您因為癌症，已捱過數次化療，身體欠安，還遠從美國返台，送小舅最後一程，兄弟之情，另人動容!!
        回想起小時候，每次回外婆家，最開心莫過於找二位舅舅，對我們兩姐妹疼愛有加，後來您和舅媽移居美國，雖然減少見面相處的機會，但您總不忘關心家族裡的長輩及晚輩們，接著世賢世媛的出生，讓我多了一對可愛的弟弟妹妹，外公外婆也有機會赴美探孫，享天倫之樂。
         三年前,您因癌症而開始漫長的抗癌之路,每次聽媽媽談起您的化療過程,總是輕描淡寫,但我們仍常存希望,您能在醫學發達的美國,得到妥善的醫治, 更盼望您能返台定居,落葉歸根!!
         如今,您已化為千風,謝謝您一生奉獻,更是抗癌鬥士,我們會謹記您的風範,也會照應弟妹,請您放心,我們愛您!!

I am so saddened to hear 峰夫走了! He’s my dearest college classmate and a long-time friend for almost half a century. As I read your message I sat there kept thinking about how kind he had treated me and how inspiring he was to me through the years. We had a plan to meet up in SoCal back in February but was postponed due to travel restriction. Please be strong in this difficult time. We will keep Philip and his beloved family in our prayer and will forever remember his friendship in kindness and inspiration for all of us! Our sincere condolence and God Bless!

You have lost a grandfather, a father, and a husband I know it’s hard for you but take comfort in knowing that Philip is no longer struggling with this terrible disease.  I have lost a very good friend and I will miss him.  Philip and I met when I went to work in Ingram Cactus in 1991.  We became instant friends and developed a great working relationship.  We worked together on some difficult projects with deadlines for completion.  We worked in the test lab many extra hours including nights, weekends, and even holidays.  Philip was always there with a smile and a positive attitude.  I enjoyed working with him.  We stayed together at two other companies and accomplished a lot as a team.  Philip was a rare type of engineer.  He was excellent at engineering analysis but he was also a very creative designer and often came up with some great ideas.  I have often said he was the best engineer I ever worked with.  But more important he was a wonderful person and a great man.  Like you, I am struggling to deal with this loss.  But we must go on with our lives.  We will one day get through the grieving but I will never forget my good buddy.


Indeed we lost a true gentlemen.
I still cherish the memories and time that I spent with Philip. I remember when Philip joined FMC again after he “retired”. During first HPHT project when I was managing the seal development program, we were looking for some additional temporary resources with some seal experience and David Zollo mentioned about Philip. I knew nothing about Philip, I had a team of “young” engineers and I thought how would Philip fit into this team. But as always I just trusted David’s suggestion and agreed to bring Philip into the team. When I met him first I was impressed with his simplicity and down to earth attitude. The way he amalgamated into the team, I had to redefine the term “young”. Philip truly mentored each and every one of us in the group with his unlimited experience and intelligence.  I loved every single moment working with Philip and enjoyed to hear about his personal stories. He was super excited to become a grandpa.
There were two instances that I still vividly remember. Since I was managing the group it was time for PDD. Before I scheduled the meeting with Philip I was thinking “what am I doing?” I am going assess the performance of Philip?? When Philip came in for the discussion, I said- Philip should we just switch the seats and Philip said “no, you are my manager” and I really didn’t know what to say except admiring his humility in my heart.
In another instance, when we were struggling with tree cap seal qualification he analyzed the test data and logically convinced me that we have design flaw. He said, “Prerit, look at this data, the seal is leaking at high temperature, let’s look at the thermal expansion of individual components” and indeed we had the issue of different thermal expansions of mating components. That’s when I realized that nothing can match the experience.
Will truly miss Philip.
