Bill was born on August 25, 1943 in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa to Elmer Louis and Velma Marie (McNeeley) Lyon.
He was raised on a farm just outside New London, Iowa and graduated from New London High School in
1961. After graduating from high school he ran the Mobile Gas Station in New London for a few years
before accepting the position of school bus mechanic in Winfield. In the 1970’s he worked as a school
bus mechanic and transportation supervisor for the Mediapolis School District. His final working years
were in maintenance and refrigeration with 7-11 stores, which later became Kwik Shop. During
retirement he operated Bill’s RV Systems. He married Beverly Hobbs in 1962, ending in divorce in 1980.
Then married Cheryl (Kerr) Mitchell on May 15 1980 and she proceeded him in death in on April 18
2001. His Air Stream Land Yacht motorhome was his pride and joy. He traveled the country in it and
enjoyed going south for winters for many years. Bill loved fixing things, grilling, fishing for redfish, the
USA, but mostly he loved people. He never met a stranger.
He is survived by his life partner, Sonja Loudenback of Leawood, Kansas; his children: Cynthia (Bradley)
Logan of Platte City, Missouri, Michael (Gloria) Lyon of Acworth, Georgia, David (Laura) Lyon of Denver,
Colorado, and Nicole Brown of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; three step-children; Shawn (Kathy) Mitchell of
Brighton, Illinois, Troy (Robyn) Mitchell of Wapello, Iowa, and Jodi (Joey) Bowman of Clinton, Iowa;
grandchildren: Ashley Logan, Makayla Lyon, Eric Lyon, Inez Lyon, Michael Lyon, Austin Lyon, Alek
Boeding, Morgan Brown, and Ian Sportel; his sister Carol Stanton of Seymour, Indiana. And numerous
step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, both wives, a brother Neil Lyon, and a sister Helen Lyon
Johnson.
Please join his family by celebrating Bill’s life on Monday, February 17th at the New London Community
Center, 103 W Washington St, New London, Iowa. Doors will be open from 2-6pm.
