Dr. Tapan K. Chaudhuri, a beloved physician and devoted family man, passed away on February 9, 2024, at the age of 82 in Kansas City, MO. Born on January 12, 1942, in Kolkata, India, he was the youngest of nine children of Suriya Prakash Chaudhuri and Debi Ghosh.
Dr. Chaudhuri's passion for medicine was evident throughout his illustrious career. After completing his medical education at the prestigious Calcutta Medical College, he became a dedicated physician who touched the lives of countless patients. He was deeply committed to healing, and his expertise in both western medicine and acupuncture brought him great joy and provided, often-times, miraculous relief to his patients.
Throughout his career, Dr. Chaudhuri received numerous awards and accolades for his teaching abilities. He shared his knowledge and skills by teaching colleagues Medical Acupuncture while serving as a preceptor for the Helms Medical Institute. He also played a significant role in the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture (AAMA), serving on the board and chairing various committees. His groundbreaking research on Trigeminal Neuralgia and Acupuncture led to the inclusion of acupuncture as a possible treatment option in medical textbooks.
Beyond medicine, Dr. Chaudhuri had a zest for life in many avenues. He was invigorated when playing any sport and was an avid cricket and football fan, often waking up at 2 am to watch matches. He was known for his love of singing and actively participated in cultural events. As the president of the Indian Association, he brought some of the best musicians of India to Kansas City including Ravi Shankar, Zakir Hussein and Jagjit and Chitra Singh.
Dr. Tapan Chaudhuri's greatest joy in life was his family. His playful nature filled the house with delight and laughter. He shared a legendary love story with his wife, Dr. Sudha Chaudhuri, whom he adored for over 57 years. Their commitment to each other was unwavering and served as an inspiration to all who knew them. He is also survived by his children, Pakhi, Raja, and his partner Jill Craybas, who was like a daughter to him. Additionally, he is survived by his two sisters, Kalyani Bose and Bani Basu.
