Sue was a graduate of Shawnee Mission East High School and continued her education at the University of Kansas. She embarked on a career as an elementary school teacher shortly after her marriage to Richard K. Johnson who was studying law. His life was cut short by a car crash, leaving her a young widow with two girls to raise.
Sue re-entered the workforce as a business owner, having collaborated with her best friend to create the Scrub Squad, a domestic cleaning company. She later sold her partnership and began a new career as a bookkeeper. Sue worked at McGuire Mortgage for many years, helping it grow from a small organization into a thriving business, serving as their treasurer until her retirement.
In 1990, after a ten-year courtship, Sue married John Robert Mackenzie. Their union lasted until his death in 2007.
Throughout her life, Sue was a devoted volunteer and philanthropist, supporting organisations that specialize in educating women and supporting families in need.
She is survived by two daughters, one stepdaughter, one stepson and their families.
Contributions can be made to Operation Breakthrough of Kansas City Missouri. There she spent many happy years sorting clothing essentials for children where she was lovingly known as a “Closet Queen.”
An informal remembrance for Sue will be held Saturday, November 12th from 1pm to 5pm at RCs Restaurant and Lounge at 330 East 135th Street, Kansas City, MO 64145. (Martin City)
