Sonia (Sunny) Hughes was born on July 16th, 1943 to Donald and Gertrude (Trudy) Armstrong. She graduated from Central High School in Kansas City, Missouri, and went on to become a Medical Billing Specialist. She met the love of her life David William Hughes and married him on January 13th, 1962. They then spent 53 years of marriage together. Over time, the couple welcomed four children into their lives, and they spent the rest of their years at their Kansas City home.
After retirement, Sunny spent most of her free time enjoying making memories with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved to read magazines, play Sudoku, spend time at the lake, bake delicious desserts, and beat her family in the game of Sequence.
Sunny was preceded in death by her husband David W. Hughes, parents Donald and Gertrude Armstrong, and brother Jerry Armstrong. She is survived by her children Kim Long and husband Steve of Raytown, MO, son David Hughes of Kansas City, MO, daughter Tammie Betts, and husband Steve of Lathrop, MO, and son Kevin Hughes and girlfriend Janine Thompson of Kansas City, MO. She is also survived by her grandson Keith Long and wife Sara of Victoria, TX with their three children, granddaughter Kayce Long and boyfriend Shane of Raytown, MO, and grandson Dakota Betts and wife Shelby of Kansas City, MO.
Sunny enjoyed spending time with her family and friends whom she loved dearly. Her smile, laughter, and presence will be greatly missed. A Celebration of Life will be held to celebrate Sunny. All friends and family are welcome. The Celebration will be at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri on Saturday, September 24th at 11:00 a.m. Refreshments will be provided.
