Sandra Lee Stevens Hopkins passed away in the early morning hours of April 9, 2023 at the Oaks of Conyers Assisted Living Center in Conyers, GA. Sandy, as she was called, was born on January 9, 1947, at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas to Jasper Lee Stevens and Margaret Noralee Burks Stevens, who both owned and operated Stevens Mortuary. She was baptized at West Paseo Christian Church where she served in their choir as a Soprano singer. She graduated from Paseo High School in Kansas City, Mo in 1965 and attended college at Pittsburg State University the following fall. While there, she married her husband, Thomas Andrew Hopkins, Jr., of Kansas City, Kansas. This union led to two children, Thomas Andrew Hopkins III (Denise) of Kansas City, MO and Tracy Ann Hopkins Sheard (Marlon) of Lithonia, GA. Sandy earned her Bachelors in Education and later, her Masters in Child Psychology from the University of Missouri Kansas City. She taught at Northeast High School and Southeast Junior High School for over 15 years until she earned her Master’s Degree, and became a school psychological examiner for 10 years in the KCMO school district until she retired in 2000.
She was a dog lover, book reader, and an avid shopper who enjoyed traveling around the city and surrounding towns. She was also a hard worker, who maintained her job while attending night classes for her Master’s and worked two jobs to put her children through college. Her retirement allowed her to enjoy travel with family and spend more time with her children, grandson, and great-grandchildren. She also loved gardening, maintaining plants in her house and a garden at her home for many years. But her main love was her family, being a great cook and event planner, along with her mother, aunt, and sister. For many years, she would travel to visit her sister’s family, and vice versa, to build a strong connection for their children that still exists today.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother-in-law, Dr. David Nathaniel Chase, Sr. D.D.S.; and her only grandson, Steven Lee Hopkins (Sade). Besides her two children, she leaves her sister, Dr. Phyllis Stevens Chase Ed.D.; her maternal aunt, Evelyn Burks Williams; her granddaughters, Vivienne Grace Hopkins and Sade Morris Hopkins Fitch; and great-grandchildren, Mykeal Huggins, Alexander Hopkins, and Myriah Hopkins, all of the Kansas City Metro Area. She also leaves behind a host of cousins, nieces & nephews, friends, and other relatives.
A visitation for Sandra will start at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, April 17, 2023 at Newcomer's Floral Hills Funeral Home, 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64133, followed by a funeral service at 10:00 a.m. A committal service will follow in Mt Moriah Cemetery, 10507 Holmes Rd, Kansas City, MO.
