Born August 2, 1966 and raised in Lenexa, Kansas, Ryan graduated from Shawnee Mission Northwest High School and studied business at Kansas State University. Though his career spanned decades, he was always most proud of the quiet, suburban life he built with JoAnn, the love of his life and wife of almost 23 years. Together, they raised two sons, Benjamin and Robert, who were the center of Ryan’s world.
Ryan showed up for his boys—rain or shine—cheering from the sidelines at every football, baseball, and (even) soccer game. In bad weather, he could be spotted tucked inside his trusty personal weather pod.
He was a scuba diver, skydiver, skier, gardener, dog lover, home improvement guru, backyard griller and fireworks enthusiast (just ask the Johnson County police) with a delightfully eclectic taste in music. Though many would consider Ryan to be a thrill-seeker, he most enjoyed spending peaceful mornings and evenings on the back patio with JoAnn and a cup of coffee or a good single malt scotch. He loved his family, his friends, his dogs, his neighbors, and blowing their minds on the Fourth of July.
Professionally, Ryan was known for his leadership and get it done attitude. He was most recently a Delivery Director at Randstad Digital Americas, after leadership roles at CrossFirst Bank, UMB, and Commerce Bank. Earlier, he spent over a decade at Mutual Mortgage Corporation and began his career at RJR Tobacco.
Ryan was preceded in death by his father, Richard A. Marshall and his father-in-law, Robert W. Ciarlelli. He is survived by his wife JoAnn, sons Benjamin and Robert; his parents, Connie and Tom Rosberg; his mother-in-law, Tina Ciarlelli; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Roxanne and Richard Cobler (Jordan and Jake) and Amy and Tony DeFeo (Dominic, AJ and Stella); his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Roseanne and Chris Corley (Sophia and Dominic); grandmother-in-law, Rosalie George, many aunts and uncles, and a large extended family and group of friends who mattered to him deeply.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Thad Stephens, who not only grew up with Ryan, but has been with us every step of the way since his diagnosis in November.
We will celebrate Ryan’s life on Monday, April 21st at Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church with a visitation from 10:00AM – 12:00PM and funeral service at 12:00PM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Children’s Mercy Hospital.
He was one of the good ones. And damn, we’ll miss him.
