She was born December 3, 1930 to Letha (Giger) and John Powell in Newton County, Missouri. Roberta graduated from Granby High School in 1948 and afterward completed secretarial training with the Dickenson Business School of Kansas City. Roberta worked for The Marley Company as Executive Secretary to the Vice President of Engineering for over 35 years until her retirement in 1996. She described Marley Company as “like family” and was active in “Marley Retirees”, participating in all the quarterly luncheons.
She married Leo Vincent on November 28, 1961; and together, they enjoyed 32 years of marriage until Leo’s death in 1993. On September 4, 1996, she married James Swiggart; and together, they enjoyed 16 years of marriage until Jim’s death in 2012.
Roberta was a lifelong, active member of the Red Bridge Church of Christ (formerly Brush Creek; and before that, the 39th & Flora Church of Christ). She recently was a member of the Holmeswood Community Chorus.
Roberta loved flowers and had a penchant for growing things. In addition, she enjoyed sewing, crocheting, cooking, and bird watching. Her backyard was a banquet to neighboring birds. It was delightful to sit in her sunroom and watch her feathered friends gather for the daily feasts she set.
Roberta had a reputation for never complaining and never speaking ill of others. She loved to entertain. She was an excellent cook who hosted many family meals and was like a “second mom” to her many nieces, nephews, and stepchildren.
She was preceded in death by two loving husbands, her parents, and one young great-grandson, Zachery Gibson.
Her memory will be cherished by those who survive: two sisters: Shirley Peterson (Howard) and Marie Nash (Dave), both of Kansas City; five stepchildren: Donna Volkert of St. Louis, Missouri; Glen Swiggart of Bluemont, Virginia; Twila Jones (Mike) of Rolla, Missouri; Marcia Pendleton (Jeff) of Kansas City, Missouri; Karen Sheffield (Mike) of Manhattan, Kansas; eleven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Red Bridge Church of Christ or Christian Family Services.
Visitation will be held from 6:00-7:00 pm Thursday, October 23rd, with a memorial service immediately following at 7:00 pm at the Red Bridge Church of Christ, 101 W. Red Bridge Road, Kansas City, Missouri.
