He is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Nancy Dickey Hughes; a son, Robert M. Hughes (Janeen); a daughter, Gwen Hughes Gepford (Rick); and six grandchildren, Melissa Gerlach (Chuck), Megan Hughes, Molly Hughes, Anne Gepford, Bill Gepford (Melissa), and Kate Gepford; and a sister, Patricia Hughes Carpenter.
Bob served in the Navy in the Pacific during World War II. He and Nancy were married October 4, 1949. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1949 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He was an elder, church treasurer, and Sunday School teacher at Ward Parkway Presbyterian Church. When he moved to Lenexa, Kansas, he joined the Lenexa United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher and Stephen Minister and taught an adult Sunday School class. After Bob gave up driving at the age of 91, he joined the Lakeview Chapel Village Foundation where he lived. He was an avid reader and student of the Bible and theology. He loved puzzles of all kinds.
Upon retirement he volunteered as a tutor at Bonjour Elementary School. Papa will long be remembered by his children and grandchildren as a kind and loving man who gave of himself to better the lives of others.

There will be a graveside service at 5:00 p.m., Sunday, August 20, 2017 at Mount Moriah Cemetery, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64131. In lieu of flowers, please visit or call someone who is lonely.
