Paul E. Schultz, 94, of Leawood, Kansas, passed away May 6th, 2011. Visitation will be held 12:00–1:00 p.m., Thursday, May 12th, at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri. A memorial service will follow at 1:00 p.m. Paul was born June 4, 1916 in Newton, Kansas, son of Peter Daniel and Justina (Wiebe) Schultz. He grew up on the campus of Friends University in Wichita, Kansas, where his father was the chemistry professor. There, he met Gail and they were happily married until her passing in 1990. He received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Friends University and later received his master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Nebraska. Paul worked as a chemist for Chase Candy Company in St. Joseph, Missouri, created a small candy factory in Wichita Kansas, and then owned Paul E. Schultz Candy Brokerage in Independence, Missouri. He served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Independence Boy’s Club. He was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Independence, Missouri. He loved racing his Sweet-16 sailboat on Lake Jacomo. Paul’s other favorite pastimes included travel, tennis and dancing. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gail Griffith Schultz; and his second wife, Denzel Lee Schultz. He is survived by two daughters, Alice Schultz of Lenexa, Kansas and Elizabeth Ballew of Aptos, California; a step-daughter, Patty Lee of Santa Fe, New Mexico; three grandchildren, Cynthia Ballew Smith, Geoff Ballew and Amy Ballew Kowal; seven great-grandchildren; and a dear friend, Cecelia Lopez.
