She was born to Mamie and Jerry Mulligan, January 28, 1929, in Lee’s Summit, MO. She graduated in the first class of St. Mary’s Grade School (now known as Our Lady of the Presentation), where her Great Grandfather carried the Altar Stone from St. Louis, by horse and buggy, to start the first Parish in Lee’s Summit. She earned an academic scholarship to attend St. Mary’s Academy High School in Leavenworth, KS where she graduated with honors in 1946.
She married the love of her life, Robert Cox, on June 2, 1951 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, KCMO. Their marriage of almost 70 years included 6 children, 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Millie is survived by her husband, Bob, and 5 children: Steve (Mary Pat) of Overland Park, KS, Kate (Scott) of Columbia, MO, Chris of KCMO, Kevin (JoAnn) of Colorado Springs, CO, and Colleen (Bill) of Highlands Ranch, CO. Her grand and great children also survive. Millie was predeceased by her daughter, Susie in 2019.
Millie was part of a generation where many women were “stay at home moms,” long before this term was coined. And by anyone’s standard, she was exceptional and accomplished where it counted. She turned houses into homes, fabrics into clothes, groceries into meals and paper into decoupage...Sometimes we went to bed with her at the sewing machine and woke up the next morning with her at the sewing machine! She was a great parent who did a lot more than make sure we brushed our teeth. She turned babies into children who felt invincible. She was pure in her intentions and simplistic in her love – it was unconditional and unwavering. She was the Proverbs 31 wife... “Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, he praises her.”
She loved her Irish roots and it is her Irish smiling eyes that will never leave us. Our loss is incalculable but remembering her beautiful life of service and love to others will make our hearts fly. A private family Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Millie was devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary so in lieu of flowers we ask for a donation to Sisters Servants of Mary 800 North 18th Street Kansas City, KS 66102.
