Mike was born on January 14, 1955 Scott AFB Illinois. For the majority of his life Mike lived in Harrisonville, MO at a home maintained by Cass County Community Living Inc. Additionally, Mike loved being an employee of the Cass County Sheltered Workshop for over 40 years as an assembly line and packaging worker. Throughout his life Mike loved to draw and was the recipient of several awards for his artistic abilities. One of his most outstanding works was a massive drawing measuring 7’ by 10’ of a road map of the United States, which is still hanging in the regional center run by the Missouri Department of Mental Health. The US map was followed by an even larger 12’ by 8’ road map of Missouri which won 1st place in a state wide art competition sponsored by the Missouri Department of Mental Health. In addition to his love of creating art, one of Mike’s favorite things was decorating and celebrating the holidays. Mike had a vast collection of shirts, ties, hats, socks, and suspenders for every holiday. He would not only collect these items but could be seen proudly wearing these highly festive outfits every year.
One of Mike’s greatest joys was being with his family. Michael was an amazing man, fun loving, always had a smile and embraced the beauty of life, he will be sorely missed by all who were fortunate to have him touch their lives.
He was preceded in death by his mother Patsy L. Heitmann and his brother-in-law Daniel J. Powers.
Survivors include his father Edward L. Heitmann, brother Peter L. Heitmann, sisters Elizabeth L. Sikes (Rodney P. Sikes), Deborah A. Powers-Johnson (Timothy W. Johnson), Patricia K. Clark, Pamela L. Kopp (Joseph T. Kopp) and lots and lots of nieces and nephews.
