He was in the Sheet Metal Union Local 2 for 70 years. After retiring in 1988, Melvin & Jean traveled the United States by motorhome. The past 14 years they wintered in Yuma, Arizona.
Melvin is preceded in death by his parents Melvin, Sr and Alice; and brother, John, Sr.
Melvin leaves behind his wife of 70 years, Jean; his daughter, Jolene Shumway & Brent; granddaughter, Jillian Shumway Bruce and Jon; and grandson, Scott Shumway & Amy. He also leaves 7 great-grandchildren; niece, Connie Steva Cale & Steve; and nephew, John Steva, Jr.
Melvin believed in going to work every day no matter what the weather, rain, snow or freezing cold. Save your money he would say!
He liked the outdoors by hunting, fishing, biking with Jolene or just boat riding on our pontoon boat.
Melvin was a city farmer. He liked his garden in the backyard raising green beans, potatoes and such. He and Jean also owned a farm for 16 years, his enjoyment was riding the big tractor.
After retirement, he went to driving a motorhome and traveled all over the United States. He said he wore out 4 motorhomes. Melvin and Jean spent the winter months in warm weather like Arizona until he could no longer drive. Then it was final retirement.
He lived a full and unforgettable life for 91 years.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 9, from 2-3 PM, followed by a graveside service, at Floral Hills Funeral Home and Cemetery, 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64133. Following the graveside service, everyone is invited to his daughter, Jolene's home, for some food.
