Maureen Elizabeth Humphreys was born in Los Angeles, California on July 16, 1961 and joined Jesus in heaven on March 7, 2016. Maureen was preceded in death by her father, Norvel C. Humphreys, Jr. and her brother Norvel C. “Clinton” Humphreys, III. Survivors include her mother Diane Humphreys, sister Jennifer L. Beaudet and brother Mitchell C. Humphreys, stepmother Sylvia Humphreys, stepfathers AJ Wilson and Carl Bendert, and also include a nephew, nieces, and cousins.
Maureen was so loved by her immediate family, but also by those who managed her care at several group homes and by the Nova Center’s school and workshop where she attended for forty years. She touched the lives and hearts of all who knew her and she brought a smile even to perfect strangers by her innocence and naiveté. Her simple remarks and requests were often unintentionally humorous and captured our hearts. Maureen had many talents and could make calculated judgements, but yet still earnestly believed in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny… although she recently began to question their modes of travel! Maureen also believed in God and Jesus, and would pray for what she needed, but would say sometimes that “it didn’t work”. She spoke often of heaven and wanted reassurance that her beloved Lipton tea would be there for her. Professionals deemed Maureen’s multiple diagnoses as rare and classified her as a very special and unique child. “Maureenie” as she was lovingly called, is now enjoying the peace and happiness she so deserved throughout her troubled life.
Memorial Mass will be held at St Bernadette’s Catholic Church, 9020 E. 51st, Kansas City, MO on Tuesday, March 15, at 11.00 am, visitation preceding at 10:00 a.m. Contributions may be made to NAMI of Greater Kansas City or to the Autism Society of America.
