Katie was born on October 8, 1930 in Shawnee, Oklahoma to Myrtle Adaline Lundgaard and Linsley Martin Lundgaard. She was the youngest of four siblings. The Lundgaards moved to Springfield, Missouri and then Kansas City, Missouri where Katie attended school, graduating from Southwest High School in 1948, and then the University of Kansas City. She subsequently attended Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois as a member of Delta Delta Delta, receiving a BA in Speech.
On September 4th, 1954 she married the love of her life, Allan G. Buenger. They made their home in Prairie Village, Kansas where they raised their three children. Katie was an active, loving part of all of their lives including time as Girl Scout Leader, Blue Birds Leader, PTA president, Cheer Team Sponsor, and lifetime fan of all sporting events, concerts and shows that her children and then grandchildren participated in.
Katie’s love, second only to her family, was music. Her beautiful voice could be heard every Sunday as part of the choir and alto soloist at Central United Methodist Church. Allan’s favorite song was “Were You There” which she sang solo acapella each year at the Maundy Thursday service.
As her children grew, Katie returned to the workforce. She loved her time working at the front desk at Corinth Elementary and in the Student Life office at UMKC.
Gardening and travel were right behind music as Katie’s favorite things. The family made wonderful forever memories each summer spending two weeks loaded in the station wagon visiting all corners of the United States. In retirement, Katie and Allan continued their travels, with favorites being the Southwest US, Pacific Northwest US and cruising in Alaska. Katie lived a wonderful life.
Katie was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and husband of 64 years, Allan G. Buenger. She is survived by children: Lisa Jordahl (Michael) of Lenexa KS, Jim Buenger (Aimee) of Shawnee KS, and Lynn Zavodny (Ron) of Basehor KS and grandchildren Stephanie Jordahl, Trevor Jordahl, Zachary Buenger, Lindsey Fisher (Spencer), Dane Zavodny, Logan Zavodny and great-grandson, Haegan Fisher.
Private family service will be held at a later date.
