Joan Moherman Beeks passed away on Wednesday, December 18, 2024 with her daughter, Sarah Beeks Higdon, and family at her side. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Joan was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. John W. Beeks, parents, Edna (Van Dyke) and William H. Moherman and brothers W. Scott Moherman and Richard (Dick) Moherman.
An accomplished pianist, Joan specialized in the visual arts, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the School of Architecture and Design at the University of Kansas. Upon graduation, she worked professionally as an artist for Hallmark Cards and later as an interior designer in Kansas City for many years. Joan was a strong advocate for the arts, serving on the boards of directors of the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, The Kansas City Ballet, the Kansas City Symphony and the Mission Hills Homes Association. She was a member of the UMKC Conservatory for Music, the Kansas City Art Institute Fireside and Sketch Box Committees, the Society of Fellows at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and Mission Hills Country Club.
Joan is survived by her daughter, Sarah (John Humphrey), granddaughter, Katherine Brooke Higdon, nieces, grandnieces and grandnephews. The family wishes to express their profound gratitude for the wonderful caregiving team of Sheena Collins, Carrie Robson, Kathy Shea and RNS Private Duty Care.
There will be a private family graveside service at Oakwood Cemetery in Baldwin City, Kansas at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Kansas City Symphony or St. Luke's Hospice.
