Jan passed away peacefully at Cedarhurst Care Center surrounded by family on Sunday, February 18, 2024.
She was born in Chillicothe, MO to Raymond & Thelma Douglass as the younger sister to Billy Douglass (Linda). Jan and her family eventually moved to Raytown, Mo. As a youngster she loved dance lessons and participated in many recitals. As a teen she even did some modeling before graduating from Raytown High School in 1959. She began her working years at Western Auto, then moved to Cook Paint for the majority of her career as a typesetter, she eventually retired from working from Croft Trailers.
Jan wed her husband of 50 years, Jim King, in 1963. Their love of family gave them 6 children, Randy (Kim) King, Jamie (Tony) Gargotta, Kelly King (Ralph), Kristie Hunt, & twins, Darren (Julia) King & Doug (Vanessa) King.
Jan spent all her love, attention and energy on her family. She attended every & any activity or sporting event the kids were involved in, most times as the head parent of any organization.
Jan was an amazing crafter & artist, spending countless hours making creative items from hand painted Christmas ornaments that the family still treasure, to sports posters & other items for her children & grandchildren. She made many decorations and home decor items for every occasion and event. She was an active leader of scouts, PTA, Baker University Mom & she & Jim were lifelong members of KC Turners. They had a very active social life including attending pool parties, dances & Jan was an avid bowler. She was also a member of One Spirit United Methodist Church here in Raytown.
Jan was beloved by all who had the honor of meeting her. All the kids friends knew they could call “Momma King” and she would welcome them as her own.
Her 10 grandchildren all loved going to her house where she would play endless hours of cards, dominoes, or any other game or craft they wanted. Special memories were made on her infamous Christmas Eve celebrations. The grandchildren include Joe (Tonya) Gargotta, Ashley Miller (Kory), Megan Cameron (Jordan), Danielle Ellis (Tommy), Kasey King, Cody Hunt (Kayla), Madison Dale, Shelby Dale, Jake Schneider, & Megan Schneider.
Jan adored all her 14 great grandchildren, Addison Miller, BriLee Gargotta, Kaydence Hunt, Chloe Cameron, Hadley Gargotta, Beckham Cameron, Graham Ellis, Presleigh Gargotta, Corbin Hunt, Cruz Cameron, Lincoln Ellis, Amorianna Sabastiano, Arielle & Avaeh Hudson.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents and in laws, as well as her husband, Jim King.
A visitation will be held from 3-6 PM on Sunday, February 25 at Floral Hills Funeral Home, 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64133. A service will be held at 10 AM on Monday, February 26, also at Floral Hills Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Cemetery.
