Harold Gauert, a man known for his kind, loving, caring, and humorous personality, passed away on October 6, 2024, at the age of 86 with his family by his side. Born on July 27, 1938, Harold lived a happy and complete life and the time he treasured most was with family and friends.
Harold was born in Kansas City, KS and attended Washington High School, followed by Pittsburg State University where he was a member of the Phi Sigma Epsilon Fraternity. After working his entire way through school, he graduated in 1962 with a bachelor’s degree. Harold still spent time with many of his fraternity brothers attending Pitt State football games, golfing, and reunions. He was a proud Gorilla.
Harold worked for one company his entire career. The company started as Lynn Insurance Group, changed its name to Universal Underwriters and then was later purchased by Zurich Insurance. Harold started his career as a programmer and retired as Vice President of Administration and Purchasing In 2000 after 37 years of service.
Harold loved life, worked hard, spent his early adult years providing for his family and giving them many experiences he loved. He enjoyed riding horses with his girls, working on his “Gentlemen’s Farm” and raising dogs, cats, horses, goats, and cows. He coached his girls in sports and other activities.
He married his loving wife, Nancy, in August of 1985. They spent 39 happy years together. Time at their lake house and their home in Colorado were great. He was a diehard, longtime season ticket holder to the Kansas City Chiefs. He also enjoyed sailing, snow skiing, water skiing, hiking, boating, gardening, backpacking, volunteering at church with the food pantry, dying Easter eggs, decorating for Christmas, and driving his classic Corvette.
While Harold’s life was very full, one thing he enjoyed the most was traveling all over the world with Nancy, and usually his brother, Ken, and sister-in-law, Sharon. They visited all 7 continents. Harold and Ken shared a special bond as brothers. They loved being together. Harold said he could never remember having a disagreement with Ken.
Harold was a long-time member of Colonial Presbyterian Church and Leawood South Country Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore and Florence Gauert.
Harold is survived by his wife, Nancy; brother, Ken (Sharon); daughters, Gena Smith (Keith), Gayle Gauert (Marlene); stepdaughter, Julie Stabenow; and stepson, David Stabenow (Jan); grandchildren, Maison Smith, Mariah Smith, McKenzie Stabenow, and Tanner Stabenow (Emily).
